Barcelona have been told that Paul Pogba might be convinced to join the La Liga side if there is an auction for the player next summer, according to reports. The midfielder is yet to sign a new Manchester United contract and could sensationally leave the Red Devils for free in 2022.

United are apparently confident that Pogba will pen fresh terms before he can discuss a possible summer move in January. The Frenchman can hold talks with foreign clubs from the first day of next year.

Pogba has enjoyed an excellent start to the season.

He bagged four assists in the club’s opening day 5-1 thrashing of Leeds United. That meant he had already bettered his last season Premier League total of three.

The 28-year-old now has seven assists for the 2021-22 campaign.

According to Sky Sports, Pogba is considering signing a new deal having been excited by the club’s summer recruitment.

He had initially stalled on agreeing new terms but is happy with the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho.

However, Spanish outlet Medio Deportivo report that Pogba’s agent, Mino Raiola, has told Barcelona president Joan Laporta that he could try to tempt Pogba into joining the Catalan side if they show an interest.

Pogba was linked with a move to Barca in the summer transfer window. Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain were apparently also interested.

Barca struggled to register their summer signings due to a La Liga rule preventing its clubs from spending over a certain percentage of their turnover on wages.

It is the same regulation which meant that Lionel Messi could not re-sign for the Spanish giants.

Messi’s contract had expired at the end of June and attempts were made to agree a new deal. That would technically have made him a new signing.

La Liga’s rules meant that he could not be re-registered with Ronald Koeman’s side. The legendary forward sensationally joined PSG, where he fronted a blitz of Europe’s top free agents.

Some of Barca’s highest earners accepted wage cuts to allow the likes of Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia to be registered. The club cut Antoine Griezmann, Emerson Royal and Junior Firpo from its wage bill.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen for Pogba to extend his stay at Old Trafford. The 20-times league champions spent close to £90m on his 2016 return from Juventus.

The Norwegian has said that the club must continue to improve its results to keep its best players. That is despite United being stunned by Young Boys in their opening Champions League group stage clash.

“Yeah, well, it’s up to us now to get results and to prove to ourselves we can win trophies,” Solskjaer said last week, before his side’s 2-1 defeat in Switzerland.

“Everyone who signs for Man United wants to win trophies. To be a part of a winning Man United, it’s the most magical feeling in the world.

“Everyone’s just focusing on doing our best and let’s see where we go.”
