West Ham or Spurs could host Champions League final as Russia invades Ukraine

West Ham and Tottenham are being considered as hosts for the Champions League final after Russia invaded Ukraine.

It is looking increasingly likely that UEFA will move the game from the Gazprom Arena in St Petersburg due to the actions of Vladimir Putin.

After mounting concerns in recent weeks, the Russian president has now launched a full-scale invasion of their neighbouring country, with a 'special military operation' underway.

While UEFA are yet to make a decision on their showpiece event, there are several candidates waiting in the wings to take it on.

And the London Stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium are two of the options.

The Premier League clubs have put themselves forward and can each offer UEFA a 60k-plus capacity venue.

They also suit UEFA's other main criteria which are being in a major European city with good transport links, infrastructure and accommodation.

However, Wembley, which is due to host the 2024 final, looks less likely as an alternative with EFL play-offs scheduled for the same weekend in May.

The Hammers and Spurs are set for a long wait to find out if they will be chosen, because UEFA aren't expected to make a decision until the month of the final.

It does look virtually impossible that the climax of this year's Champions League will remain in Russia, though.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson called for the change of venue earlier this week, prior to Putin's attack on Ukraine.

He said: "A Russia that has pariah status – [there is] no chance of holding football tournaments in a Russia that invades sovereign countries."

His comments were then backed up by UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, who urged the remaining English teams in the competition to boycott the final if it wasn't moved.

"I would boycott it. I would personally not want to be playing in a football match in St Petersburg, given what the Putin regime is doing," she advised Manchester United, Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool.
