West Ham have confirmed Kurt Zouma has suffered a serious hamstring injury, in a second significant defensive blow.

West Ham were awaiting the results of a second check on Zouma’s injury before discovering the full extent of the setback.

There were initial concerns that Zouma had suffered a problem in his knee.

A statement released on Tuesday said: ‘West Ham United can confirm that Kurt Zouma sustained a hamstring tendon injury during Saturday’s Premier League victory against Chelsea.

‘A scan on Monday revealed the damage and the 27-year-old French international defender has already started his recovery programme at Rush Green under the supervision of the medical team.’

West Ham have not put a timescale on Zouma’s absence and are hopeful he will play again this season though his injury will further increase their need to sign a new defender in January.

The central defender now faces an extended period out as he recovers from the problem

The injuries to his first-choice pair has left Moyes with Craig Dawson and Issa Diop as his remaining fit centre-backs.

Zouma has been a big hit since his £30million summer move from Chelsea, establishing himself as a first-choice pick for manager David Moyes and starting every league game since mid-September.

West Ham also confirmed that Ben Johnson has suffered a low grade hamstring strain against Chelsea and also begun his rehab.
