Leicester defender Wesley Fofana has told supporters not to worry following his horror leg break during the Foxes' pre-season friendly against Villarreal on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old had a breakthrough campaign under Brendan Rodgers last time out, helping his team to the brink of Champions League qualification and FA Cup glory at Wembley.

While his misfortune will now see him miss the start of the new campaign, he has been overwhelmed with positive messages and praised the work of the Leicester medical team as his recovery begins.

The 20-year-old France youth international, who joined from Saint-Etienne for almost £40m last summer, told his 233,000 Instagram followers: "Hello guys, many thanks for all your messages.

"It is a bad day today but I am in a tremendous club with a wonderful medical team. I will give you news as a soon as I have a final diagnosis but we already know that I have a fibula fracture.

"I will come soon and stronger: do not worry."

Jamie Vardy said in a comment: "You’ll be back stronger and better."

With former team-mate Christian Fuchs adding: "Speedy recovery little Wes!!!!"

The injury came during a challenge from Villarreal forward Nino, with Fofana needing lengthy treatment on the pitch before being replaced by Ben Nelson.

Earlier this week, Rodgers spoke about his excitement at the return of fans ahead of the new Premier League season, with the club making impressive moves for Patson Daka and Ryan Bertrand among others.

He said of their Spanish opponents: "We're playing the Europa League champions, a team that were absolutely outstanding in that tournament last season, and it's just each step in each game, we're playing.

"The competition is increasing, so to play against them at home at the stadium, I'm really looking forward to it.

"Like I said, both teams are still in early parts of the preparation phase, but it's always good to play good opponents.

"They were one of the best teams in Europe last season, so it will be a nice examination for us."

The match finished 3-2 in the favour of the hosts, with Caglar Soyuncu, Harvey Barnes and Ayoze Perez scoring with Fernando Nino and Alex Millan netting for the visitors.
