Werner’s Chelsea record since September incredibly proves Neville wrong

Chelsea forward Timo Werner was one of the most coveted players in Europe last summer, with the likes of Liverpool, Real Madrid and Barcelona all linked with the then RB Leipzig star.

However, it was Chelsea who secured the player's services, completing a £47.5m deal to bring him to Stamford Bridge as part of a major summer spending spree which also saw Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz and Edouard Mendy join the club.

The revamp was a clear signal of intent from Chelsea, who were backing manager Frank Lampard to challenge for the Premier League title after an impressive debut season in charge, which saw the Blues secure a top four spot despite being subject to a transfer ban.

Werner was seen as central to their chances, with the forward expected to continue the magnificent goalscoring form which saw him net 34 goals for Leipzig in 45 games last season.

Ahead of Chelsea's opening game of the season against Brighton and Hove Albion, Gary Neville tipped Werner to score 20 goals for the Blues.

"It all seems a bit too good to be true," Neville told Sky Sports. "You talk about £45million, not a lot of money.

"You think of the goals he’s scored in four years in a top league, he’s 24 years of age. You think about de-risking your signings, that looks like the least risky you can get.

"He’s tall, he’s quick, scores goals, he has a good mentality. Twelve international goals in 31 appearances, not all of those are obviously starts.

"I will be absolutely amazed if he doesn’t get 20 goals for Chelsea this season if he stays fit.

"Particularly with [Mason] Mount around him, [Christian] Pulisic, Havertz, Ziyech when he gets fit. There’s too many good players around him. I’d be surprised."

However, Werner's has struggled so far this season, having failed to score since early November in the league.

He got off to a decent start in the Premier League, netting four goals in his first eight appearances, but the goals have dried up since and he has not found the back of the net in his last 11 league games.
