Manchester United new boy Wout Weghorst has started training with the club following his arrival from Burnley. The Netherlands international has arrived as short-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, having spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Besiktas. And he’s now getting used to life at Carrington as he looks to make his mark under Erik ten Hag.

Manchester United confirmed the arrival of Weghorst last week, with the striker poised to challenge Anthony Martial for a starting berth.

And images from Getty show him training with the Red Devils as he looks to fight his way into contention for Wednesday’s showdown with Crystal Palace.

Weghorst could be seen being put through his paces, with the United star working on his fitness.

He also took part in a rondo, along with the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Fred, Victor Lindelof, Facundo Pellistri and Lisandro Martinez.

Weghorst stared directly into the camera lens on a couple of occasions, looking comfortable in his new surroundings.

He sported boots from Adidas, who are the club’s official sponsor.

United will be hoping to use their new forward as quickly as possible, with the matches coming thick and fast as they look to continue their recent improvement.

Next up is a tough test against Palace, who lost 1-0 to Chelsea in their Premier League showdown at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

On Sunday, United confirmed Weghorst could wear the No 27 shirt at Old Trafford.

It was a number last worn by Alex Telles, with the Brazil international currently spending the season on loan at La Liga side Sevilla.

Marouane Fellaini is another old occupant, with the Belgian sporting it between 2015 and January 2019 before being offloaded by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Federico Macheda took the number in 2009, having previously worn the No 41 at Old Trafford.

And Mikael Silvestre, Terry Cooke and Gary Neville have donned the shirt in previous years, too.

Speaking after his move to United was confirmed, Weghorst admitted he couldn’t wait to get started and show fans what he’s capable of.

He told club media: ”I feel privileged to be joining Manchester United.

“I’ve played against the club in the past and it’s a fantastic feeling to now have the chance to pull on the famous red shirt.

“I’ve seen United’s progress under Erik ten Hag this season and can’t wait to start playing my part in pushing the team towards its aims.

“Whatever happens in the next few months, I can promise to give everything to the club for as long as I am here.

“I thank everyone who has played a part in getting me to this stage.

“And now I am looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting involved straight away.”

Former Liverpool star Stan Collymore, meanwhile, has brutally slammed the decision to sign Weghorst and compared him to Frankenstein.

“Wout Weghorst? I mean, what the, er, heck?” he wrote for The Mirror.

“Is that where Manchester United, the world’s so-called biggest club, are now, the bargain basement at Poundland?

“I had a lot of United followers saying trust the process on social media of late but this is a bloke who’s already on loan somewhere from Burnley.

“And you can’t go from the Turkish Super Lig to one of the old’s biggest clubs and be expected to do this business.

“He’s a presser, a big lump. United are supposed to play at the Theatre of Dreams but it’ll be the Theatre of Screams given they’re trying to sign Frankenstein.

“There’s nothing about him that’s refined enough for United and if he becomes a club icon I will… Actually, don’t worry, he won’t.”
