Wayne Rooney faces a tricky task in stabilising finances at Derby County.

Rooney, who has called time on a career that saw him surpass scoring records with both Manchester United and England, has been part of a team that has overseen an upturn in results.

At the time of Phillip Cocu’s departure on November 14, the Rams sat rock bottom of the table with one win in 11 matches, losing on seven separate occasions.

Since Liam Rosenior, Shay Given and Justin Walker joined Rooney as co-interim bosses, have lost only four of their next 10 and briefly climbed out of the relegation zone before defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.

Although Rooney is desperate to find a run of consistent form on the pitch, financial worries have threatened to dismantle what is seen as a talented playing squad by Rooney.

The Mail report that while players are still waiting to be paid their salaries for December, there is concern over the potential takeover by Sheik bin Zayed Al Nehayan.

Chief executive Stephen Pearce eased fears by telling talkSPORT : “We've heard nothing from either party of any problems with the takeover. We've been told it still is absolutely taking place.

“All the legals and documentation is all completely done, it's just a case of the final closing of the deal now. We expected it to take place on December 24.

“That didn't happen and now we are working to get funds sorted for the players' payroll – that is our No 1 priority.”

Rooney spoke about his honour at being named manager of the Championship side on Friday.

He said: “When I first arrived back in the United Kingdom I was completely blown away by the potential of Derby County Football Club.

“The Stadium, Training Ground, the quality of the playing staff and the young players coming through and of course the fan base that has remained loyal and supportive.

“Despite other offers I knew instinctively Derby County was the place for me.

"To be given the opportunity to follow the likes of Brian Clough, Jim Smith, Frank Lampard and Phillip Cocu is such an honour.

“I can promise everyone involved in the club and all our fans, my staff and I will leave no stone unturned in achieving the potential I have witnessed over the last 12 months of this historic football club.”
