WATCH: Christian Eriksen provides assist on his return in Brentford friendly

Christian Eriksen provided an assist as he made his long-awaited return to action in Brentford’s behind-closed-doors friendly versus Southend this afternoon.

The footballing world collectively held its breath as Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 clash with Finland just eight months ago, with the 30-year-old given life-saving CPR on the pitch at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium.

There was enormous relief as Eriksen was subsequently released from hospital following a successful operation. However, the midfielder was later let go by Inter Milan as the ICD he had been fitted with prevented him from playing in Serie A.

And while fears remained that Eriksen may never play at an elite level again, Thomas Frank brought his fellow countryman to Brentford on a six-month contract in January and the Denmark international appears to be closing in on his first-team return.

Eriksen could be forgiven for looking a little rusty considering the length of time he’s spent on the sidelines, but the playmaker shone on his 30th birthday as a Brentford XI beat Southend 3-2 on their training ground.

Josh Dasilva scored a hat-trick in Brentford’s victory and Eriksen registered the assist for the midfielder’s opener, stealing possession before playing his team-mate through on goal with a perfectly weighted pass.

‘We want to hit that perfect balance where he is in a good place because he hasn’t played for several months, and we need to get some mach minutes into him in a friendly – at least 45 minutes, to get used to having players around him.’

He added: ‘I’m a very positive person.

‘I only prepare myself for the best scenario, and I am convinced he will come back at a good level.’
