Leeds Rhinos coach Rohan Smith had brought Jonny Bairstow into camp to impart his wisdom ahead of the new Super League season but it was opponents Warrington who racked up a cricket score on opening night.
The Wolves, keen to put the memory of last season’s relegation battle behind them, raced out of the blocks with five first-half tries to lead 30-0 at the break at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Matt Dufty produced the first score of Super League’s season just four minutes in, and was soon followed over the whitewash by Daryl Clark, Josh Thewlis and Danny Walker as Daryl Powell’s side blew away last year’s Grand Final runners-up.
Former New Zealand and Samoa prop Sam Kasiano got the fifth try on debut and Stefan Ratchford added 10 points from the tee on his 300th Warrington appearance.
Leeds stemmed the tide in the second half and on 60 minutes wing Derrell Olpherts crossed for their first try of 2023. But James Harrison barged over for his first Warrington try to add further pain for Smith.
