Vinicius Jr slams ‘country of racists’ and La Liga after Real Madrid red card

Patrice Evra involved in altercation with Man City staff after Real Madrid win

Vinicius Jr has lashed out at La Liga and ‘racists’ in Spain following his red card against Valencia on Sunday, with Real Madrid’s 1-0 defeat ending in chaotic fashion. The Brazilian was subjected to racist chants from the stands before getting involved in a scuffle with Hugo Duro, as soaring tension saw him restrained by team-mates.

With Los Blancos chasing the game due to Diego Lopez’s first-half opener, emotions were running high at the Mestalla Stadium while the clock ticked down. In the second half, the match stopped for several minutes after Vinicius was subjected to racist chants.

The 22-year-old was then sent off for violent conduct deep into second-half stoppage time after striking out at Duro, who had his arm around the Madrid ace’s neck moments prior. Vinicius sarcastically applauded the decision and walked off the pitch to a chorus of boos.

Having faced instances of racism multiple times in La Liga this campaign, the incensed youngster took to Twitter after the game to vent his frustration, where he branded Spain a ‘country of racists’.

“It wasn’t the first time, nor the second, nor the third. Racism is normal in La Liga,” he wrote. “The competition thinks it’s normal, the Federation does too and the opponents encourage it. I’m so sorry.

“The championship that once belonged to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo [Nazario], Cristiano [Ronaldo] and [Lionel] Messi, today belongs to racists. A beautiful nation, which welcomed me and which I love, but which agreed to export the image of a racist country to the world.

“I’m sorry for the Spaniards who don’t agree, but today, in Brazil, Spain is known as a country of racists. And unfortunately, for everything that happens each week, I have no defence. I agree. But I am strong and I will go to the end against racists. Even if far from here.”

Vinicius made a peace sign as he was booed off the pitch, while also appearing to taunt Valencia fans about the possibility of relegation. Defeat leaves Los Blancos third in La Liga, behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid with only three matches to play.

Having risen through the ranks with Flamengo, Vinicius was spotted at an early age, and Real Madrid shelled out big money to sign him as a teenager. After taking three seasons to get to grips with La Liga, the winger is now in full flow and performing consistently on the biggest stages.

With 45 goals in all competitions over the past two seasons, Vinicius is one of the most coveted players in Europe and top clubs across the continent would surely be lining up to submit bids if his latest ordeal moves him towards the Bernabeu exit door.
