Villa fans celebrate Newcastle buying ‘second fiddle fringe player’ Matt Targett

Aston Villa fans have trolled Newcastle over their signing of "second fiddle fringe player" Matt Targett.

Newcastle signed the 26-year-old on a four-year deal on Wednesday after agreeing a £12million fee with Villa. It followed an impressive loan spell for the Englishman at St James' Park during the second-half of last season.

The Magpies will be hoping for more of the same from Targett, who was outstanding as they climbed out of relegation and finished 11th in the Premier League. But Villa supporters didn't appear phased by the left-back leaving the club after three years as they mocked their mid-table rivals for splashing out on a "fringe player".

Referencing the spending power now at the North East side's disposal following their takeover by a Saudi-led consortium in October, one Villa fan took to Twitter to write: "Newcastle with all those billions yet signing Villa’s second fiddle fringe players, absolutely love to see it."

Another cheekily jibed: "Signing our fringe players."

The comments successfully riled up several Newcastle fans, with one hitting back: "He finished above you and was better than the player you replaced him with."

Another argued: "Villa only have second fiddle players. Just so happens he's better than our current left backs and plays pretty damn well under a better manager."

Targett signed for the Villains in the summer of 2019. He featured in every Premier League game the following 2020/21 season and was even voted players' player of the year.

After being allowed to leave on loan in the same window that Steven Gerrard brought left back Lucas Digne to the Midlands, Targett's new manager Eddie Howe was able to get the best out of the Englishman, who made 10 out of his 16 Premier League appearances for the club.

Howe said following his transfer: "Matt had a fantastic impact after joining on loan in January and made a big contribution to some excellent team performances. He is a great lad and a top professional who undoubtedly makes us stronger so I'm delighted he sees his future here."
