Victory sack Brebner after 7-0 drubbing

Melbourne Victory have officially parted ways with Grant Brebner as head-coach.

Chairman Anthony Di Pietro confirmed that Brebner will be removed from his position following their 7-0 defeat at the hands of Melbourne City.

Brebner’s termination comes after only winning four from 22 games as coach and his side sitting bottom of the league after 16 games.

“Grant and myself and the chief executive and some board members have met and we’ve come to the agreement that Grant will no longer be the coach of Melbourne Victory and it is in the best interests of everyone involved,” Di Pietro said.

“We just wanted to make that clear this evening, I wanted to take the opportunity to thank Grant for his time, he has worked relentlessly,

“Things haven’t worked out for a multitude of reasons and they’ll be clearly a review of everything that has happened to lead to this and what needs to be done.”

Di Pietro said the decision was made with Brebner with the best interests of the club in mind.

“We have to think about what’s best for the club going forward,” Di Pietro said.

“You can sit there and speculate about resignation, mutual parting of ways, termination – this is quite different,

“We have known each-other for many years and have enormous respect for each-other.”

Brebner thanked the club for allowing him to coach the club he was able to represent as a player and said it was a “privilege” to be given the role.

“The first thing that comes to mind is thanking the club for giving me the opportunity to be head coach of a fantastic football club,” Brebner said.

“Sadly, my expectations and the club’s expectations are a lot higher than the position we sit in.

“This club will go on and come back bigger and better than the situation we’re in.”

The defeat was the Victory’s heaviest in club history and a tie with the biggest ever margin in A-League history.

Brebner said the result was “unacceptable” and said himself and Di Pietro want “what is right for this football club”.

Di Pietro said there will be more announcements in coming days regarding who will take the club forward.

Melbourne City striker Jamie Maclaren’s performance five goal haul ultimately provided the difference between the teams – equalling the most goals scored in a single A-League match.

“I think tonight, I just got some unbelievable service,” Maclaren said.

“It’s one of those nights where they go for you and I knew ever since I played in the A-League that one team will concede a fair bit of goals from me purely because I know I create chances and some nights they don’t go in for me but tonight they did.”

Maclaren’s goals were bookended by a goal of the season contender by former Victory winger Andrew Nabbout and Adrian Luna which heaped misery on a dark night in the Victory’s history who also lost Adama Traore to an early red-card.
