VAR ‘made mistake’ for Liverpool goal in Leicester win as viewers left baffled

Some Premier League supporters were left confused on Monday night after Liverpool’s second goal against Leicester was allowed despite Curtis Jones initially appearing to be in an offside position on the VAR replay. Jones hammered a dipping half-volley on the spin past Daniel Iversen to make it 2-0 to Liverpool in the first half – but some viewers were convinced the goal should have been ruled out for offside.

But those viewers were led to believe that due to a minor VAR error. As the officials first looked at whether Jones was offside, they paused the screen and drew the lines which showed the Liverpool midfielder was clearly beyond the last defender.

But the VAR Chris Kavanagh quickly realised he had actually drawn the lines at the wrong moment. He had done so when Cody Gakpo was playing the ball to Mohamed Salah, rather than when Salah was playing the final pass into Jones.

That was not shown on Sky Sports at the time, however. The camera cut to referee Craig Pawson instead. But when the lines were shown correctly drawn, it was proven that Jonny Evans’ heel played Jones very narrowly onside and so the goal was rightly given rather than ruled out.

That meant Liverpool very quickly doubled their advantage at the King Power Stadium – though it did not stop the confusion on social media with many wrongly adamant the goal should not have stood. The home team, who are facing relegation to the Championship, were booed off by their own supporters at the half-time whistle.

It only got worse afterwards too with Trent Alexander-Arnold scoring a sublime free-kick to make it seven wins on the spin for Jurgen Klopp’s Champions League-chasing side. Alexander-Arnold was full of praise for fellow scouser Jones post-match.

The right-back told Sky Sports: “It’s not just been tonight [that he’s stepped up], I think [it’s] since he came into the team again. He’s a lad who obviously would have wanted to play more throughout the whole season.

“But he has stepped up when he has got his chance and I think that’s all you can do. He has shown his quality on and off the ball. And he has definitely impressed everyone.

“He has set standards for himself and we need to keep that as a team and himself, he has got a level now that he needs to hit every game. Today was an outstanding night for him and helped the team win the game.”

While his manager Klopp said: “He improved a lot, so I think a lot of things came together. You should not forget he is still a young boy and one or two years ago he played super games for us as well. Then he had a difficult spell with injuries.

“This year was especially bad. He could watch a lot of football, he could understand the game better and it looks really like that. Both goals were absolutely exceptional. I am not sure they were real chances.

“First with the left foot, a similar goal to the last goal he scored [vs Tottenham]. The second one is a super finish. He is in a good moment, really cool.”
