Van Dijk insists Liverpool will 'discuss' their defensive frailties
Virgil van Dijk reveals Liverpool will ‘discuss’ their defensive frailties after failing to keep a clean sheet for the sixth straight Premier League match… while Trent Alexander-Arnold backs Darwin Nunez to score as frequently ‘as London buses’
- Liverpool made a positive return to the Premier League with a narrow 2-1 victory
- Two own goals by Wout Faes helped the Reds come from behind versus Leicester
- Virgil van Dijk insisted that Liverpool would ‘discuss’ their poor defensive display
- Livewire Darwin Nunez has struggled to find the net with a catalogue of chances
- Trent Alexander-Arnold backed the striker to turn around his form in front of goal
Liverpool players will have an open conversation about recent defensive frailties before chasing their fifth win a row at Brentford on Monday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men got lucky in beating Leicester 2-1 to maintain their Champions League challenge with The Foxes missing chances and then presenting Liverpool with two own goals through Wout Faes.
Reds defender Virgil van Dijk called the defensive performance ‘very poor in moments’ and says they’ll have a look at it in training before travelling to London.
Liverpool struggled defensively despite coming from behind to beat Leicester 2-1 on Friday
Two own goals from Wout Faes in the first half handed Jurgen Klopp’s side the crucial victory
‘We got through the game which is very important but there are things to improve on which we will discuss. We know we can do better and it’s going to be a tough game in London. Brentford will be full of confidence (after beating West Ham).’
Meanwhile, right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold reckons Darwin Nunez will start scoring goals as regularly as London buses – which may prove a lucky omen with Liverpool travelling to the capital next.
Nunez had his name chanted by The Kop after an enthralling all-round performance in Friday’s win over Leicester but so far the £64million Uruguay striker has fallen short in front of goal with just five in the Premier League.
Centre-back Virgil van Dijk urged that Liverpool would ‘discuss’ their defensive issues of late
Darwin Nunez again missed a catalogue of chances despite finding himself in promising areas
Ian Rush and Luis Suarez also began their Anfield careers slowly and Alexander-Arnold is convinced the tide will turn for Nunez.
‘You’ll get people who will say he’s missed a few chances and he’s missed one-on-ones but he’s getting himself in those positions and when the goals do come I’m sure they will come like London buses,’ said the England defender.
‘We’re just waiting for that but he’s a fantastic lad and he’s an outstanding player as well.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has backed the £64million striker to turn around his goal-scoring form
‘People will judge him on his goals and that’s part of being a striker, that’s part of life.
‘But I think he can keep walking off the pitch with his head held high because he’s such a threat, getting in behind.’
Klopp who is also waiting to see if Andy Robertson, awarded an MBE in the New Year’s honours list, can recover from a dead leg in time to face The Bees.
