'Upset' Jesse Lingard sends message to Man Utd fans over costly Young Boys error

Jesse Lingard says he is ‘upset’ over the role he played in Manchester United’s shock defeat to Young Boys in the Champions League.

The Red Devils suffered a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Swiss outfit Young Boys in their opening game of this season’s Champions League.

Summer signing Cristiano Ronaldo fired the visitors ahead on his record-equalling 177th Champions League appearance, but Young Boys fought back after Manchester United were reduced to ten men, Aaron Wan-Bissaka being sent off for a late tackle before half-time.

Still, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side looked set to hang on for a point in Group F, only for Lingard’s poor backpass in stoppage time to be intercepted and put away by Young Boys’ Jordan Siebatcheu.

‘Last night hurt,’ Manchester United academy graduate Lingard posted on social media.

‘Every time I pull on the shirt, I hope people understand what it means to me. I always go out wanting to do the best for the club, the team and the fans.

‘I’m upset for my part in the defeat. Mistakes happen in football but we pick ourselves up and go again.’

‘You need 10, maybe 12, points, you need to win your home games, win one away from home,’ he said.

‘Of course we’ve lost the opportunity to get three points but we’ve got two home games next and got to focus on them two.

‘Lack of concentration, make a mistake and you get punished. You get done. We did that last year in Europe.

‘We know we’ve given ourselves a more difficult task than what we did last year but everyone thought we were through after two games last year.’
