Truss’s speeches lasted less time than Leroy Rosenior’s 10 mins as Torquay boss

Lettuce Liz Truss's key public addresses as Prime Minister were so short that Leroy Rosenior actually lasted longer in his 10 minutes as Torquay United manager.

For a leader who showed scant regard for numbers as she crashed the economy, Truss has actually developed an impressive habit for posting record-breaking stats. Her 44 days in charge of the country maker her the shortest reigning Prime Minister in history, and now she has eclipsed poor old Leroy (in a sense), too.

That's because her three major speeches as premier – her first speech as prime minister, her resignation and her farewell address this morning (25 October) – lasted less time combined than Rosenior's ill-fated spell as Torquay boss.

Let's break that down. Truss gave her first speech as the UK's new prime minister on September 6, strolling up to the lectern outside Downing Street like a robot that had just had a fresh dose of WD40.

By our watch, her speech lasted four minutes and five seconds, and that's probably being generous. Her resignation speech outside Downing Street on Friday October 21 lasted just one minute and 29 seconds, roughly the same amount of time it takes to boil your kettle.

Would Leroy Rosenior have done a better job of running the country than Liz Truss? Let us know in the comments section below.

That brings us up to five minutes and 34 seconds. Add in her farewell speech on Tuesday morning, which somehow lasted a rip-roaring three minutes and six seconds, only just short of her entire time as PM, and it takes us up to eight minutes and 40 seconds.

Incredibly, that's a whole 80 seconds longer than Rosenior lasted as Torquay manager in 2007. The popular pundit was appointed to the job just as the club were being taken over by a local consortium.

Rosenior told the story to the BBC. He said: "I went down, did the press conference and Mike [Bateson, Torquay chairman] rang me about 10 minutes later.

"I thought he was joking but he said you're not going to believe this, but they've given me the offer I want so just hold tight and we'll get it all sorted.

"It's weird because I was there previously for four years, got promoted and had some wonderful times as manager. But everybody talks about the ten minutes. It wasn't really an issue because I was never really in situ.

"I was pleased that Mike had managed to get the money that he wanted for the club and we all moved on."
