Troy Deeney has warned Manchester United they face an uphill battle if they are to defeat their rivals in the FA Cup final.

The two sides of Manchester are set for an epic clash at Wembley on Saturday, with Erik ten Hag’s outfit tasked with stopping City from going one step closer to securing a historic treble.

Writing for The Sun, Deeney reflected on his own experience facing off against Pep Guardiola’s men at Wembley when he captained Watford as they took on City in the 2019 FA Cup final.

Javi Gracia’s side managed to frustrate their opponents in the early stages of the clash but the competitive nature of the match would be short-lived as David Silva gave City the lead after 26 minutes.

Subsequent goals from Gabriel Jesus, Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling saw the final descend into a 6-0 rout, and Deeney revealed he felt like his side were outnumbered on the pitch.

Troy Deeney believes Man United face an impossible task facing their rivals in the FA Cup final

The 34-year-old captained Watford in their 6-0 defeat to Man City in the 2019 FA Cup final

‘Facing Pep Guardiola’s City is a challenge like no other. They suffocate you, they frustrate you, they mentally exhaust you, they bully you and they end up demoralising you.

‘On more than one occasion against City, I have literally found myself, out on the pitch, counting their players because I was genuinely convinced they must have more men than us.’

The 34-year-old added that while United possess significantly more talent than his Watford side did in 2019, they will ultimately be unable to overcome the Premier League Champions at Wembley.

‘United have far more quality than we had at Watford and I’d really like to tell you that I think this Cup final will be a great contest — but I don’t think it will even be close.

‘You can say it’s a one-off game. You can say that anything can happen in a derby. You can say United are in decent form. You can say that United beat City at home the last time they met.

‘Try all you like to make a case for Erik ten Hag’s men but you will be ignoring just how good City are.

‘Even Real Madrid got spanked at the Etihad in the Champions League. City are world football’s Galacticos now.’

Deeeney admitted that while United are more talented than Watford were, he just doesn’t see any other result other than a comfortable win for Pep Guardiola’s side
