Tottenham have seemingly missed out on a deal for Wolves star Adama Traore – with the winger set to sign for Barcelona after snubbing Antonio Conte's wish to convert him into a wing-back.

Spurs have been chasing new recruits all month and have been locked in negotiations to bring Traore to north London for weeks.

But that deal has now collapsed in the final days of the transfer window.

And Traore is now on the cusp of sealing a sensational return to the Nou Camp, in a loan deal with a £29million option.

According to The Athletic, Tottenham's talks with Wolves were progressing well, but Traore wasn't keen on filling the wing-back role that Conte had identified him for.

Reports had emerged in recent weeks that Conte was keen to convert Traore into a wing-back to try and inject some much-needed dynamism in the team without having to sacrifice his preferred tactical shape.

But Traore wasn't convinced and is now set to return to his hometown club, Barcelona.

Missing out on Traore is another blow for Conte and Spurs in what is turning out to be a sobering month for the Londoners.

Conte is desperate to bring his own players in to help try and salvage the remainder of the season, but so far, funds haven't been made available for him to do so.

The Italian believes that the club can still clinch an unlikely top-four place this season, but that three new players were needed this month to help that become a reality.

With under five days remaining until the window slams shut, it's getting harder and harder to see Conte getting his wish.

Spurs are reportedly in discussions over a big bucks move for Porto star Luis Diaz and a loan deal for Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

But it remains to be seen if those deals will beat the deadline; especially as Tottenham are reportedly unwilling to meet Diaz's £67m release clause.

The 25-year-old has netted 16 goals in 28 games for Porto this season and starred for Colombia during last summer's Copa America.
