Tottenham’s sneaky Dele Alli clause could pocket Spurs more money

Tottenham will benefit in more ways than one if Dele Alli joins Everton on Transfer Deadline Day.

Not only will Antonio Conte shift an unwanted player off of the club's books, Spurs also stand to make a huge financial saving thanks to the way the deal is structured.

Alli has been a peripheral figure at the north London club for some time now under a succession of different managers.

But his Tottenham nightmare looks to be coming to an end with a switch to Everton in the offing.

Spurs have reportedly agreed to let Alli join Everton for free with a £10million fee due once he has played 20 games for the Toffees.

That might seem like a poor bit of business given some clubs were willing to pay £40million for his services not all that long ago.

But it could prove savvier than you might think, thanks to a forgotten clause in Alli's deal when he joined Spurs from MK Dons.

Tottenham signed Alli for £5million in 2015 – a modest fee given some of the performances he turned in following the move.

As part of the deal, the League One outfit inserted a sell-on fee into the transfer, entitling them to 20 per cent of any future sale.

However, with Alli set to join Everton for free – with a fees due later on related to appearances – it seems likely that Spurs will not have to pay MK Dons the 20 per cent sell-on they agreed on seven years ago.

Some reports suggest the deal could eventually reach £30million depending on add-ons, but crucially there is no initial transfer fee.

If that turns out to be correct, then Daniel Levy and co. could have saved themselves in the region of £6million plus thanks to the way the deal is structured.

A deal is not over the line yet, though, with Newcastle thought to be considering a late move for the England international before the window closes.
