Tottenham’s Gimenez plan endorsed by Bayern legend as warning sent to Levy
Tottenham’s potential plan of signing Santiago Gimenez has been endorsed by a former Bayern Munich striker. However, Roy Makaay has warned Spurs chairman Daniel Levy that he will face plenty of competition to sign the Mexico international.
Tottenham will likely look to sign a striker in an upcoming transfer window. They allowed Harry Kane to leave late in the summer and didn’t bring in a direct replacement.
Gimenez was linked with a late move to Spurs but stayed put at Feyenoord beyond deadline day. He has only enhanced his reputation with his start to the season.
The 22-year-old has scored 12 goals in eight appearances for Feyenoord so far this term, netting in each of his side’s last seven games. Makaay, who scored 103 goals in 183 appearances for Bayern, finished his career at Feyenoord.

He hopes his old club can hold onto Gimenez until the end of the season. But he knows there will be plenty of interest in him come January and can see him making a move.
Makaay said on FC Rijnmond: “If you watch the games and score the goals like that, he really is a great player. I hope Feyenoord can keep him until the end of the season.
“If Gimenez develops like this, he could go as early as the winter break. I think there will be clubs calling for him in the winter break.”
Summer signing Ayase Ueda would be in line to be a direct replacement for Gimenez at Feyenoord should he leave. He stood in for the Mexico star, who was suspended, in the first two Champions League group-stage games.

But Makaay says Ueda is not near the level of his team-mate. He added: “You see a clear difference with Gimenez. He is by far the best striker in the Netherlands at the moment.
“Gimenez shows it every week. It is not yet enough to give a detailed assessment of Ueda, but he does score a ‘half goal’. Because that 0-1 was not in his name.”
Spurs were confirmed as interested in Gimenez by agent Morris Pagniello, who is close to the player’s family. Paginello told Mediatempo in August: “Santi is one of the top 10 players in Europe, of the strikers there are, because there are few and now with the departure of many strikers to Saudi Arabia, there are few on the market.
“Then even Tottenham (became interested), many clubs. I have a friend who trains there and there are many clubs that would like to have Santi this season.”
