Tottenham to allow Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero to defy Premier League advice and travel to ‘red list’ countries… as Nuno Espirito Santo bemoans lack of support leaving club powerless to stop Argentina duo

Tottenham stars Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero are set to join the Argentina players who will defy Premier League advice by travelling to ‘red list’ countries during the upcoming international break.

Nuno Espirito Santo claimed the lack of support from the British Government, FIFA or the Premier League leaves Spurs powerless to stop them and they are instead working on options to minimise the impact of 10 days of compulsory quarantine in a Government hotel upon their return.

Nuno said: ‘Is there any player when he is called up for his international team that will say no? We are trying to take care of that situation, anticipate the damage, anticipate when they return. All of us have this problem.

‘We cannot stop it, but we will try to find the best way so when they return we can get them sooner. There are ways and we as a club are trying to support our players.’

Argentina have World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela, on Friday, Brazil on Sunday, and Bolivia, on Friday September 10, a day before Tottenham’s next game at Crystal Palace. The Brazil game is the key fixture for Argentina, who beat their neighbours and fiercest rivals in the Copa America final in July.

Among the options for Lo Celso and Romero — neither of whom started Tottenham’s 1-0 win against Watford — might be to return immediately after facing Brazil. It would clear them sooner to return to training at Spurs, who face Chelsea and Arsenal after the trip to Palace.

‘It’s a problem that affects all clubs and all the South American players in the Premier League,’ added Nuno.

‘We have to obey the Government law. We will try to do so but at the same time we don’t have any kind of help from FIFA, the Government or the Premier League in this situation.

‘We know what it means for all of the players to play for their national teams. It’s something they’re very proud of, so what we are trying to do is anticipate the situations. Not only for the next international break but also there will be a couple more, so we need to be clear.’

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said that Thiago Silva would not go to play for Brazil because it would rule him out of five games for his club. Tuchel said: ‘If Thiago goes to a red list country he will play three times … come back, sit in a hotel for 11 days.

‘It would cost him, in our schedule, five matches, then he would be able to play two matches and then go again on international break. For a Chelsea player that is paid by Chelsea, this can’t be the solution, clearly not.’

But Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez and midfielder Emi Buendia have travelled to meet up with the Argentina squad with the permission of the club.
