Tottenham have provided Lyon with a response over Houssem Aouar after being ‘offered’ the playmaker in a possible transfer, according to reports. Aouar has long been a target of Premier League clubs but a move has not yet materialised.
The midfielder has entered the final two years of his Lyon contract and his value has depreciated.
The club’s president Jean-Michel Aulas valued Aouar at around £51m last summer but it is unlikely that interested parties will be able to pay that much this year.
French clubs are scrambling for cash this summer following the collapse of a broadcasting rights deal.
Lyon also find themselves in a micro crisis.

Supporter unrest over a tough 2020-21 season has been accentuated by a terrible start to the new campaign, in which they have failed to win so far.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Spurs have been ‘offered’ the opportunity to sign Aouar before next Tuesday’s transfer deadline as Lyon look to make as much money as possible on one of their most coveted assets.
However, the Premier League side have responded by saying that Aouar is not a priority for them at the moment.
The North Londoners have not made a formal bid for the France international, nor have they made one for fellow reported transfer target Weston McKennie.
Boss Nuno Espirito Santo seemingly wants to sign another forward, despite already adding winger Bryan Gil earlier this summer and being boosted by Harry Kane’s confirmation that he will stay at the club beyond Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
Spurs have been linked with moves for Wolves speedster Adama Traore and PSV starlet Noni Madueke. However, a deal for the latter seems unlikely now that he has extended his contract until 2025.
Spurs and Wolves have agreed that Traore’s price is around £39m but are apparently at odds over how a deal would be structured, according to Spanish newspaper AS.
Traore rose to prominence as one of the Premier League’s best wingers under Nuno’s management at Wolves.
The Portuguese head coach now seems keen to bring the Spaniard to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Should be join, Traore would be guaranteed to play alongside Kane this season after the England captain revealed that he will be staying at the club.
The 28-year-old has been the subject of strong and public transfer interest from Manchester City but Spurs have refused to sell him. Kane still has three years remaining on his contract.
He wrote on social media: “It was incredible to see the reception from the Spurs fans on Sunday and to read some of the messages of support I’ve had in the last few weeks.
“I will be staying at Tottenham this summer and will be 100% focused on helping the team achieve success.”
