Harry Kane aimed a subtle dig towards Marseille’s fans after Tottenham Hotspur dumped the Ligue 1 club out of the Champions League in dramatic style on Tuesday. Spurs came from behind to beat Marseille 2-1 at the Orange Velodrome with the last kick of the game.

Despite the stadium’s Visage Nord’s closure due to crowd trouble during September’s game against Eintracht Frankfurt, Tottenham would’ve expected a hostile atmosphere in France. They received the same and more. On the eve of the crunch clash, the team hotel was engulfed in firework displays strategically put on by Marseille fans.

The Spurs players’ sleep was disrupted at 1.30am and 4.30am, with club sources describing the firework displays as ‘very prolonged’. But while it seemed it had worked its magic throughout a lackadaisical first half from Antonio Conte’s side, the visitors sprung a surprise with their fightback after the break.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s 95th-minute long-range strike saw Tottenham leapfrog Frankfurt into top spot and condemn Marseille from a Europa League play-off place to rock-bottom in Group D at the last possible opportunity. After full-time, Kane posted a dressing room photo onto social media, captioned: “Full-time fireworks.”

The cheeky nod to the Marseille fans’ antics acted as a final blow on a night that couldn’t have gone much better for Spurs. While a goal down at half-time without Conte on the touchline through suspension, the north London outfit seemed destined to drop into Europe’s second-tier competition.

But Clement Lenglet’s 54th-minute header breathed life into Tottenham’s performance, helping Conte’s assistant Cristian Stellini oversee a memorable win. Spurs will now be seeded in the Champions League last-16 draw, where a second-placed side will await.

Conte watched his team claw back from behind to salvage something from a match for the third consecutive outing in Marseille. Last week, Spurs had to equalise against Sporting CP after former star Marcus Edwards fired the Portuguese visitors ahead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. And at the weekend, they had to recover from going 2-0 down at AFC Bournemouth, leaving the south coast with a 3-2 triumph.

All eyes are on the Premier League and League Cup before the one-month World Cup break this winter. Tottenham host Liverpool in a mammoth clash on Sunday before travelling to Nottingham Forest in the cup and ending the first section of their league campaign back on home turf against Leeds United.
