Tottenham have missed out on their ‘own Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp’

Tottenham have missed out on appointing their own Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp. Arne Slot had been compared to the Manchester City and Liverpool managers but now will not be taking over at Spurs.

Slot emerged as a leading candidate for the Tottenham job earlier this week. He had impressed at Feyenoord having won the Eredivisie this season, a year after leading the Dutch club to the Europa Conference League final.

Reports had suggested a deal was close to being struck with Spurs. But Slot released a statement on Thursday saying he would be staying at Feyenoord and there had been no formal talks with the Premier League side.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is now back on the search for a new boss. Levy had previously received praise for his interest in Slot.

Late last month, former Netherlands international Wim Kieft claimed there were similarities between Slot and Guardiola. Kieft admitted Slot hadn’t yet managed at the level of the Spaniard but their philosophy and style of play were akin to each other.

He wrote in De Telegraaf: “The nice thing about Guardiola is that with him football is not just about winning prizes. Of course, he wants to win prizes, but he just makes sure it is always fun to watch his teams.

“At Barcelona he obviously had Lionel Messi, he had Xavi and Iniesta there too. But wherever he sat in all the years, everywhere you immediately saw his hand.

“What Guardiola does at Manchester City, Arne Slot does at Feyenoord, but at a different level. That has everything to do with money, but his view and his philosophy are the same. Slot has to work with players of lesser quality.”

Slot has also been compared to Liverpool’s Klopp. As recently as Wednesday, former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan claimed Slot can be Levy’s own Klopp, with his style of play as well as tactics in the transfer market.

Jordan said on talkSPORT: “What he’s always needed, and it’s easy for me to say, is someone like Klopp, that build the club from the fanbase through to the ownership model. Klopp hasn’t been given an embarrassment of riches, he’s taken [Philippe] Coutinho, slung him out of the door, got £150million and bought Virgil van Dijk and the goalkeeper, Alisson, and built around that.

“So this is why this Slot character, at this stage in his development, coming from Dutch football, winning in Dutch football, coming here and playing a brand of football that will excite the Tottenham fans and get that noise quelled about how they play. And then get the other noise quelled about winning games and being able to attract some talent into the dressing room that is going to be reflective of what the Tottenham fans want.”
