Tottenham fans turn on Sanchez as substitute dragged off after 23 mins
Tottenham star Davinson Sanchez was taken off by Cristian Stellini just 23 minutes after coming on as a substitute against Bournemouth. Reports claim the Spurs fans booed the 26-year-old and cheered as he was replaced by Arnaut Danjuma.
Sanchez didn’t start the match but was brought on to replace the injured Clement Lenglet in the 35th minute. Spurs were winning 1-0 at the time thanks to a Son Heung-min goal.
However, Bournemouth quickly equalised through Matias Vina. Sanchez’s pass to Pedro Porro was too casual and the Spanish wing-back lost the ball and Vina capitalised by lobbing Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
The Cherries turned the game on its head six minutes after half-time through Dominic Solanke. This time, Sanchez poked the ball straight at the striker, who remained composed to finish smartly.
Seven minutes later, Stellini saw fit to take Sanchez off and replace him with the lesser-spotted Danjuma. The Athletic claims Sanchez was being booed by the home supporters before he was taken off. There were then cheers from the home crowd when he was replaced.
Stellini changed formation by bringing on the Dutchman for just his sixth appearance in a Spurs shirt since joining on loan from Villarreal in January. It was an afternoon to forget for Sanchez.
The Colombia international has rarely featured this season for Spurs. Sanchez has started just six Premier League matches this term, with Saturday’s appearance his ninth as a substitute.
Sanchez’s performances this season have often led to criticism. Last November, Spurs won a dramatic game 4-3 against Leeds at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Despite the result, ex-Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara was heavily critical of Sanchez. He said: “Sanchez should never, ever be coming on the football pitch for Tottenham. He plays with cement in his feet.”
Sanchez joined Tottenham from Ajax in the summer of 2017 for a fee of up to £42million. It was a club-record deal at the time for Spurs.
Saturday’s outing was his 202nd in a Tottenham shirt. But he is in the middle of arguably his worst season at the club.
Sanchez has played at least 30 games each previous campaign he has been in north London. But he has played just 21 times so far this term.
