Tottenham fans were left fuming on Sunday after the club posted on social media to mark Emerson Royal’s horror debut. The 22-year-old was run ragged throughout the Premier League match at Crystal Palace as Spurs suffered a 3-0 humbling.
Royal joined Tottenham from Barcelona on transfer deadline day after the financially-stricken Catalonians moved to get the defender off their books.
And the player went straight into the Tottenham starting line-up for their early kick off at Selhurst Park.
But Royal came up against an inspired Wilfried Zaha, who gave the Brazil international a torrid afternoon.
Zaha bullied the Tottenham man throughout as Royal learnt first-hand just how demanding life in the Premier League can be.
The Crystal Palace winger opened the scoring with 15 minutes remaining before substitute Odsonne Edouard marked his own Premier League debut with two late strikes.
Spurs may have been forgiven for glossing over Royal’s debut and quickly diverting their attentions to their next match against Rennes in the Europa Conference League.
But they instead took to Twitter in the aftermath of the defeat to post a picture of their summer signing tackling Zaha with an emoji of a crown.
Needless to say, the PR stunt didn’t go down well with the Spurs faithful.
“Wasn’t a good one. We got thumped and embarrassed,” said one fan in response to the post.
“Zaha had all of him for breakfast, lunch, dinner,” replied another angry supporter.
Some people posted emojis of laughing faces, while another Spurs follower wrote: “This is embarrassing, admin. We lost 3-0 so probably best to stay under the radar today.”
Tottenham had started the season in fine form and began the weekend at the top of the Premier League table after winning their opening three games.
But they dropped to fifth on Saturday night after being overtaken by Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Brighton.
Nuno will be hoping to get back to winning ways in the Premier League next Sunday when his side host Chelsea.
Despite previously topping the table, Spurs have only found the back of the net three times this season.
And they could struggle to improve on that tally next time out as the Blues have conceded just one goal in their opening four games – and that was when they were down to 10 men against Liverpool at Anfield.
If Royal is to be the answer at right-back for Tottenham, he will need to come up to speed with the intensity of Premier League football – and he will need to do it quickly.
