Tottenham can have dream rebirth under Xabi Alonso with four key signings

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is reportedly interested in making Xabi Alonso the club’s new manager as he hunts a long-term replacement for Antonio Conte. The Bayer Leverkusen coach is well thought of in the world of football and would be something of an ambitious if bold appointment as the club looks to the future.

Alonso will hold huge sway with potential signings as players seek to work with one of the best midfielders of all time. Here Express Sport takes a speculatory look at who he may be able to convince to north London as Spurs eye a dream rebirth following a difficult season.

Florian Wirtz

Wirtz is the most exciting attacking talent in the Leverkusen squad and in Germany as a whole. He has hit the ground running after nine months out with a knee injury, scoring four and producing eight assists in his 20 matches this season.

Tottenham are badly in need of some creativity in central positions and Wirtz has that in spades. Furthermore, at just 20 years old he is someone who can go onto become one of the world’s best while in North London as Tottenham plan for the long term. He would be a huge coop for the Lilywhites and should be top of their wish list if they decide to hire Alonso.

Piero Hincapie

Tottenham have been terrible at times defensively this season with their leaky backline undoing much of Harry Kane’s good work going forward.

Should they decide to appoint Alonso, he may be able to help them attract a player they have been regularly linked with over the last 12 months – Ecuadorian centre-back Hincapie.

The 21-year-old is one of the best young defenders in world football and can replace Ben Davies and Clement Lenglet on the left side of the defence. A number of other clubs have also been linked with Hincapie but Alonso’s presence could give Spurs the ultimate edge.

Edmund Tapsoba

Tottenham’s defence has been so bad this season that one new arrival is unlikely to cut it if they want to get back to challenging at the top of the Premier League. Eric Dier’s performances in particular have left a lot to be desired and a replacement is desperately needed.

Tapsoba could be the option having played alongside Hincapie and Alonso at Leverkusen. The 24-year-old is solid presence at the back and could be expected to improve under the pressure of playing in the Premier League offering the Lilywhites a chance to transform their backline.

Martín Zubimendi

Alonso’s contacts extend beyond Leverkusen having taken charge of the Real Sociedad B Team before moving into senior management. Zubimendi was one of the players under his control before going on to excel in the first team.

Tottenham’s midfield needs some work with the team struggling whenever Rodrigo Bentancur does not play. The Spaniard could be the option, complementing the industrious Pierre-Emilie Hojbjerg while the Uruguayan is on the sidelines before slotting in alongside him when he returns.
