Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is lucky no fans are allowed inside stadiums, according to Arsenal legend Kevin Campbell. The 58-year-old has overseen a tricky Premier League campaign in north London. And Brendan Rodgers has emerged as Daniel Levy’s top managerial target to take over should the situation continue to worsen.

Tottenham hired Mourinho as Mauricio Pochettino’s replacement in October 2019, with the Portuguese going on to steer them into the Europa League.

Spurs started the season in blistering form, with Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min shining as they took the Premier League by storm.

Tottenham have, however, regressed over the course of the campaign.

They’re currently ninth in the league table, six points behind Chelsea in the race to finish in the top four.

And Campbell, speaking to Football Insider, has slammed the 58-year-old and insisted he’s fortunate no fans are currently allowed inside stadiums.

“I have quite a few friends, believe it or not, who support Spurs and let me tell you they are not happy,” he said.

“Mourinho is getting away with it because there are no fans there.

“He was getting away with the way they were playing earlier in the season because they were winning.

“Now that they are not winning, a magnifying class is being shined on him.

“What is going on? Have Spurs really improved? I don’t think they have. Look at them now, they are falling like a stone.

“It is a difficult one but if worst comes to worst and they do not win the League Cup and they go out of Europe, you are looking at big problems for Mourinho.”

The same publication has claimed Levy wants Rodgers to take over.

He won’t be axing Mourinho just yet but it appears he’s planning for life without the 58-year-old behind the scenes.

Rodgers was of interest to Tottenham back in 2012 following the departure of Harry Redknapp.

However, Spurs ended up going for Andre Villas-Boas instead – with the Portuguese lasting two years at the helm.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are next in action against West Ham on Sunday – where they’ll go up against a Hammers side flying high under David Moyes.

And Mourinho wants the club to ‘make him look good’ when they play against their rivals.

When asked for his secret behind winning London derbies over the years, the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss said: “Special teams. Special teams win lots of matches.

“We coaches are as good or as bad as our players make us. We depend a lot on them. Especially coaches with a lot of experience and long histories, who went through every possible experience.

“We get to a stage of our career where we feel much more stable, much more humble and we realise with all the experience we have that the ones really responsible for our career are the ones that play for us.

“So hopefully at the weekend the guys have a great performance and they can make me look good. Because they’re the ones that make us look good or bad.”

Mourinho also challenged his Tottenham side to see out matches better.

“The first game against West Ham is a little bit of the reflection of our season and the reflection of some of our problems,” he said.

“If we win that game you would all say we played amazingly well, which we did.

“We had an incredible first half, lots of quality, lots of dominance, we played really well but we didn’t win it and this is a reflection of many of our matches.

“In that first match when I arrived, we started very well. We dominated the game for 75 minutes, we were winning 3-0 and we conceded two goals and we finished the game looking like we were in trouble.

“This team – on many, many occasions – plays well but doesn’t get the results it deserves.”
