Antonio Conte learned that he will be suspended for Tottenham’s crunch Champions League clash with Marseille in his Friday press conference. The Italian was red-carded for his furious reaction after Harry Kane had his winning goal against Sporting Lisbon controversially disallowed by VAR.

Unlike Premier League rules, managers who are sent from their technical area are handed an automatic one-match ban. Conte was seemingly unaware of this when he faced journalists ahead of Spurs’ Premier League clash with Bournemouth.

The 53-year-old must sit in the stands for Spurs’ final Champions League group game against Marseille. The north Londoners ideally need to avoid defeat to progress to the knockout rounds despite leading Group D on eight points. Sporting and Eintracht Frankfurt sit behind on seven points each.

Quizzed on his suspension, Conte revealed: “Honestly, I didn’t know I was banned for the match with Marseille. If there is this type of rule then I think the referee should show more attention. I can only say this.

“I hope next time what happened to me, other referees pay more attention or understand the emotion of the moment and give the right decision.

“Maybe a yellow card, if you book with me a yellow card because it shows me not to come onto the pitch but now it’s the past. But I’m sure my players, my staff are ready to face the situation in the best possible way.”

Conte remained fuming with the decision made by VAR officials to chalk off Kane’s late strike. Replays showed that the striker had strayed slightly ahead of the Sporting defence and, crucially, the ball as Emerson Royal headed into his path.

The technology has been slammed by Conte, who believes it should be impossible to make ‘mistakes’ when looking at the monitor.

“I continue to think it’s impossible to make mistakes with VAR. It’s impossible. You have a screen, you have time. It’s impossible to make mistakes and for this reason I don’t like this. It’s the same if the coach can see [what will happen at] the end of the game and you can make different substitutions,” the former Chelsea and Inter Milan manager raged.

“For me it’s impossible to make a wrong decision with VAR and to keep people waiting five or six minutes. To wait five or six minutes means you have confusion in your mind. It’s incredible.

“I hope in every situation to see honesty. I only ask for this. But to make mistakes with VAR, it means you’re really, really… I don’t want to say what I think.”
