Tottenham have agreed a five-year deal with Cristian Romero with the player now pushing for his move to north London, according to reports in Italy. The Atalanta centre-back has been identified as the club’s top transfer target by Fabio Paratici and could now be the long-term replacement for Toby Alderweireld.
Spurs have already swopped to sign Romero’s former teammate Pierluigi Gollini, who has joined on an initial loan from the Serie A club.
Central defence was always the top priority for Tottenham this summer but the club are yet to strengthen in that department.
Talks were held with Sevilla over a possible swoop for Jules Kounde.
Joachim Andersen was also considered before Nuno Espirito Santo and Paratici eventually decided against the deal.

Now Romero tops the club’s shortlist following an impressive contribution to Argentina’s Copa America triumph.
Paratici is well aware of the 23-year-old’s qualities having signed him for Juventus and Romero is now considered one of the best defenders in Italy.
According to Di Marzio, a deal is now edging closer as Spurs have an agreement in principle with the player over a five-year contract.
All that is left to solve is Spurs are just £6.8million (€8m) short of Atalanta’s valuation of Romero.

Negotiations remain ongoing and there is optimism a deal could be completed in a matter of days or weeks.
It’s also claimed that Spurs do have a plan B in place in case talks for Romero fail to reach a positive conclusion.
The strategy involves potentially signing three separate defenders: Takehiro Tomiyasu, Nikola Milenkovic and Kurt Zouma.
Heading into the window, Spurs wanted at least one new recruit at centre-back, while being open to a second.
