Tom Brady jokes about Gareth Bale with surprise "Wales, golf, Madrid" tweet

In an awfully strange sports crossover, NFL icon Tom Brady has made a Twitter joke about Real Madrid star Gareth Bale.

Bale caught the attention of the football world in 2019 when he held up a flag which read "Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order". And it seems it also made waves in the American football scene, because Brady has referenced it in response to a follower on social media.

After announcing the launch of his new golf sportswear range, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback received a tongue-in-cheek reply tagging Bale's account. In a surprise twist Brady tweeted back: "Wales, BRADY Golf, Madrid. In that order."

Brady is a big fan of what he and his fellow Americans would call soccer. He visited Old Trafford earlier this year to watch Manchester United play Bale's former club Tottenham.

Having previously met England captain Harry Kane, Spurs supporters were convinced Brady was supporting them. But he tweeted just before kick-off: "Here we go! @Cristiano vs. @HKane. I might fist pump if you score Harry but I’m riding with @ManUtd today."

What's been a weirder sports crossover? Let us know in the comments section.

After Ronaldo hit a hat-trick in a 3-2 win Brady chatted with the Red Devils legend on the Old Trafford turf and posed for pictures with him and his team-mates.

Shortly after his trip to England, Brady announced he would not be retiring from the NFL as he had previously said he would be doing. So fans put two and two together and thought Ronaldo had convinced him to change his mind.

It seems he has never met Ronaldo's old Real team-mate Bale, whose relationship with the Spanish club has continually deteriorated in recent years. He was spotted looking awkward during dressing-room celebrations this week.

Seeing as Brady is a big golf fan himself, hence his clothing company BradyBrand launching a golf range, there's a chance the pair could cross paths on the course in the future following his joke about Bale.
