Todd Boehly calls Chelsea fans ‘demanding’ after learning lots about transfers

Todd Boehly labelled Chelsea fans "demanding" as he reflected on the lessons learnt after a year at the helm – admitting he's "not figured it out".

Since taking the reins at Stamford Bridge last May, the 49-year-old American has sacked two managers and spent close to £600million on transfers. On the pitch, his first season has been disastrous with the Blues set to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Boehly, who stepped up as acting director of football for many months following the exits of Marina Granovskaia and Petr Cech, has come in for considerable criticism from fans and pundits alike as a result.

Speaking about the transition from baseball and basketball to football at this year's Milken Institute Global Conference, the co-owner of the LA Dodgers and the Lakers said: "It's such a global sport and unlike in the US there are no unions.

"So there's a market for top players in every country in the world and each one of those markets is different. You've got the Portuguese market and the French market and the English market.

"Then of course obviously you have to build a team and your coach is the conductor of the team, so I think there's a lot that we've learned about the different markets. The global aspect of it all and, as you said, the fans are demanding."

Boehly also urged supporters, who have often voiced their frustration amid a horrible run of form in recent months, to keep backing his consortium.

"You know they want to win and we get that we want to win so you know, I think our view though was that this is a long-term project and you know we're committed to the long-term," he continued.

"We very much believe that we're going to figure it out. We've got the best league in the world, we've got what I think is the top city in the world and we've got an unbelievable location in the top city in the world."
