Todd Boehly admits he’s not yet ‘figured Chelsea project out’

Lampard admits Chelsea 'got what they deserved' at Arsenal

Nearly £600million and four managers into their Chelsea project, Todd Boehly has admitted to a leading institute of business leaders they have not yet managed to “figure it out”. Just hours after Chelsea crashed to their sixth successive defeat against Arsenal on Tuesday, Boehly was invited to speak at the prestigious Milken Institute Global Conference.

Thankfully, the catastrophic first 11 months since taking over at Chelsea were only touched upon, with Boehly promising he and his fellow co-owners would soon get the hang of it. But in contrast to the relative success of their American franchises, the global aspect of the Premier League seems to have caught them out.

“It is such a global sport and, unlike in the US, there are no unions, so there is a market for top players in every country in the world,” said Boehly. “Each one of those markets is different.

“You have got the Portuguese market, the French market, the English market, so [you have] the ability to go to these markets. Then of course, obviously, you have to build a team and your coach is the conductor of the team.

“I think there is a lot that we have learned about the different markets and the global aspect of it all. The fans are demanding. They want to win. We get that. We want to win.

“Our view, though, was that this is a long-term project and we are committed to the long-term and we very much believe that we are going to figure it out. We have got the best league in the world, what I think is the top city in the world and we have an unbelievable location in the top city in the world.”

Chelsea will not have European football to offer transfer targets this summer. They currently sit in 12th on a mere 39 points having won only 10 of 33 top-flight matches this season.

After losing six in a row across all competitions, Chelsea may even finish in the bottom half of the table for the first time since coming 11th in 1995-96. They are poised to have their worst ever goalscoring season in the Premier League too.

Unless they score 15 goals in their last five games, they will record a worse total than in 1995/96 when they managed 46. They have only scored 31 times so far, with matches against Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle to come.
