Thugs ‘throw dead rats at rival fans’ with match interrupted in appalling scenes

Painted dead rats were thrown at Standard Liege fans by rival Charleroi supporters according to a damning statement from their fan group.

Fans welcomed players on the pitch with tifos and pyrotechnics with the Belgian Pro League clash on Friday (April 14) having to be delayed when smoke bombs were thrown onto the pitch.

With Standard going on to win 3-1, attention turned to the alleged actions of Charleroi fans with a dead rat pictured on a chair inside the Maurice Dufrasne Stadium stadium.

Supporters claim that around ten dead rats, which were painted red, were launched into home sections, calling on league bosses to take action.

The statement read: "'Supporters' from Charleroi threw dead rats in the direction of T2. We are not talking about one or two rats but easily about ten.

"We hope that the Pro League will act, that our club will file a complaint and that animal associations will get involved.

"You really are big s****. We already knew that but you've just confirmed it even more."

Charleroi supporters were also spotted in mock 'pest control' outfits with masks on, with messages before the match calling their rival fans rats.

A chant heard during the game said: "In the mud, there are rats, they are everywhere the rats, they are the people of Liege."

After 33 fixtures each, Charleroi sit eighth with 47 points, two places behind Standard who have 55 points.

The actions of fans may well have been expected, with the two clubs clashing on several occasions in the past.

Back in November of 2022, Charleroi supporters threw smoke bombs onto the pitch in similar scenes, with fans now calling for league bosses to act.
