Jurgen Klopp has made plenty of big name signings since taking over at Anfield in 2015, but the Liverpool boss doesn't always get his own way in the transfer market.

Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Alisson, Fabinho and Sadio Mane are just some of the players to have arrived on Merseyside under the watchful eye of the German boss.

But what happened to the stars who were lined up for a move to to the north west, only to snub the Premier League champions, and why did they choose to reject the Reds?

Daily Star Sport have delved into the transfer files to find three Liverpool targets who said 'nein' to linking up with Klopp at Anfield.

Ramon Hendriks

Liverpool are no strangers to signing players from the Netherlands. Luis Suarez was poached from Ajax, while Sepp van den Berg was bought from PEC Zwolle. Ramon Hendriks, however, is the one who got away.

The defender, 19, was first spotted by the Reds at FC Dordrecht Youth, but chose to reject Liverpool's advances in favour of a move to Feyenoord so that he could continue his development in Holland.

He told Voetbalzone: "That club (Feyenoord) just suits me best as a person. It was very difficult to say ‘no’ to Liverpool. I thought about the adventure but decided to choose a relatively surer path.

“I don’t think I would say ‘no’ again if they ever come forward for me, haha."

Jeremy Doku

Liverpool have been turned down twice by Belgium international Jeremy Doku, first in 2018 and then again in 2020.

The Reds initially tried to sign Doku as an 18-year-old, but not even a chat with Klopp could lure the youngster away from Anderlecht.

Het Nieusblad asked the wonderkid why he snubbed Klopp and co. the second time around. He said: "I did a lot of research first, wrote down all the positive points and only then did I make a decision.

"I knew that I first wanted to make an intermediate step. Going to a top club now would be too soon. I still have a lot to learn and Rennes is the ideal place for that."

    Marcelo

Long term injuries to Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have left Liverpool short at the back this season.

Klopp wanted to address those problems in January, but could only bring in Preston's Ben Davies and Schalke's Ozan Kabak.

Now it has emerged there was a third option for the Reds – Lyon ace Marcelo.

The defender's agent has revealed he held talks with Anfield chiefs over a potential switch to Merseyside.

Marcelo told Canal+: "Liverpool? My agent spoke with them, but I feel good here. My dream is to win the championship with Lyon."
