Three Chelsea players who may suffer from Frank Lampard sacking and three that may benefit

Chelsea: Lampard comes out fighting as pressure grows

Frank Lampard appears to be on borrowed time at Chelsea with Roman Abramovich carefully considering his options at Stamford Bridge. The likes of Julian Nagelsmann, Thomas Tuchel, Massimiliano Allegri and Brendan Rodgers are reportedly under consideration if the billionaire Russian owner decides to swing the axe on his former player.

Lampard is expected to be given the time to turn things around though and there is hope that performances will improve in the coming weeks.

The Blues recorded back-to-back victories against Morecambe and Fulham following their 3-1 humbling against Manchester City, proving that Lampard can get a reaction from his players.

But Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat to Leicester brought them back down to earth with Lampard on the brink.

Express Sport takes a look at the players who may suffer or benefit from change in the dug-out…

JUST IN: Chelsea star Mason Mount was right all along about Kai Havertz transfer

Mason Mount – Suffer

It’s clear that Mount has made enormous strides under Lampard, who he worked with at Derby in the 2018/19 season.

The Chelsea academy graduate is now one of the first names on the team-sheet but still he has to face up to critics.

Unfairly, Mount has been labelled ‘the teacher’s pet’ for both club and country due to his exemplary attitude.

While he continues to do his talking on the pitch, it’s clear he still has some doubters.

Harry Redknapp famously predicted that Lampard would go “right to the very top” and Lampard recently made a similar claim, stating: “He has just turned 22. Imagine when he’s 27.”

Callum Hudson-Odoi – Benefit

Although Lampard is a big fan of Hudson-Odoi and persuaded him to sign a new bumper deal, the Chelsea boss is struggling to get the best from him.

The young winger is likely to be frustrated with his game time and his lack of opportunities.

With competition for places high, even when he does get a chance Hudson-Odoi looks like he’s playing in fear.

There’s a reason Bayern Munich tried to sign him several times and a coach like Julian Nagelsmann, who has a track record developing players, could be the ideal fit for the 20-year-old.

Tammy Abraham – Suffer

While Abraham may not be a regular, he may not be playing for Chelsea if it wasn’t for Lampard.

The striker impressed in the early stages of last season but has struggled for consistency.

There’s speculation that Chelsea could target Erling Braut Haaland and his arrival in west London could spell trouble for Abraham.

He is yet to prove that he should be Chelsea’s No 9 for years to come but there’s still time to showcase his talents.

Timo Werner – Benefit

Given that two of his former bosses are in the frame for the job in the form of Nagelsmann and Hasenhuttl, Werner may welcome change.

Not only that but based on his first few months in the Premier League, his move to Chelsea hasn’t lived up to its billing.

Werner looks a shadow of his former self and is starved of confidence.

Lampard is struggling to get the best from him and it’s starting to take its toll on Werner, no matter how hard he tries.

There’s still a top player in there and Chelsea need to unlock him as soon as possible, as he has the quality to turn their season around.

Andreas Christensen – Suffer

Although Christensen has fallen out of favour since the arrival of Thiago Silva, Lampard still appears to have a soft spot for him.

The Dane has rarely performed in recent times and has failed to live up to the promise he showed at the start of Antonio Conte’s second season at the club.

Yet still, Chelsea don’t seem to be willing to let him move on and much of that, is down to Lampard who still sees him as a part of his plans.

Kepa Arrizabalaga – Benefit

While Kepa has hardly helped himself with his performances, it’s been a sad demise for the world’s most expensive goalkeeper.

There were shades of David de Gea’s early Manchester United days in his first two seasons at the club but now he has lost his place to Edouard Mendy.

While Mendy has been reasonably solid, Chelsea are set to lose mega-money on the £71million they paid for the Spaniard.

A change of manager, who boosts his confidence and offers him a chance to turn things around could pay off.
