Thomas Tuchel set to replace Frank Lampard as Chelsea manager
Former Paris Saint-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel is set to replace Frank Lampard as Chelsea manager.
Lampard is set to be sacked today after a poor run of form saw Chelsea slip to ninth in the Premier League table.
The former England international is midway through a three-year deal at Stamford Bridge but Chelsea’s recent slump has left club owner Roman Abramovich concerned that the side will slip out of the Champions League, which was considered a minimum requirement after a £225million spending spree last summer.
Chelsea’s decision to part with Lampard is clearly down to the club’s poor form but it has also been influenced by the availability of Tuchel.
The German is considered one of the finest managers of his generation but he was sacked by PSG shortly before Christmas, leaving a string of players furious at the Ligue 1 giants.
Tuchel is keen to make an immediate return to management and the Athletic claim he will replace Lampard imminently.
Tuchel made his name at Dortmund, ushering in a brand of fast-paced, high-press football that made the Germans one of the finest sides to watch in Europe.
His two years at the club yielded just one trophy but he left with a win percentage of 62% and it was enough to earn him the main job at Paris Saint-Germain.
Tuchel won six trophies in two years in the French capital, though it was his failure to win the Champions League that will leave a sour taste as the Ligue 1 giants lost to Bayern Munich in last year’s final.
The German’s win percentage in France was 74.8%.
