Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has said that he will learn lessons from his Champions League final defeat with Paris Saint-Germain last season but that he will not feed back his experience to his current players.

An all-Premier League final against Manchester City awaits the Blues in Porto on Saturday.

Tuchel was PSG head coach when the Ligue 1 side were beaten by Bayern Munich in last year’s showdown. Kingsley Coman’s second-half goal earned the German side their sixth European title.

The final three rounds of the 2019-20 edition of the Champions League were effectively played as a condensed mini-tournament between August 12 and August 19 due to the postponement of the season by the coronavirus pandemic.

Tuchel soon left PSG and in January replaced Frank Lampard as Chelsea head coach.

The west Londoners have embarked on a wonderful run. They were ninth when the German took over and finished fourth in the Premier League.

Chelsea now face Man City hoping to win a first Champions League since 2012.

A tough draw has meant that they have beaten Real Madrid, Porto and Atletico Madrid in the knockout rounds.

But Tuchel has said that he will not be feeding back to his players his previous experience of a Champions League final because the scenarios and the players are different.

“It is a different team and a very different situation,” Tuchel said on Friday ahead of the final.

“If I was a player, I wouldn’t like my coach to talk about his personal experience in the last year. If I was a player, that would only help me if we had that experience together that we could share, use and grow from it.

“But, for me and my staff, the experience is a crucial thing. After every match I am a smarter coach with more experience.

“This is the demand I have for myself, learning lessons from defeats. It was a three-match tournament, a knockout tournament.

“It was Bayern Munich vs Paris so there’s not much that we can say that we did wrong and say we can learn to say we need to make it happen.

“Like I said, we need all the matches to evolve as coaches and this was a big part of it.

“We feel that we have come a long way, six matches played in the Champions League together after Frank played a fantastic group stage. We feel that we have worked hard to be here.

“We feel absolutely the hunger that we are happy but not overexcited to be here. We want to be over excited after the match.

“We are here to win the trophy. Maybe as the slight underdogs but this does not change anything and we want to leave Porto with the trophy.”
