Thomas Tuchel ‘feels sorry’ for Harry Kane as German media react to debut
Harry Kane made all the wrong headlines after a disastrous start to his new life in Germany. Leading newspaper Bild led with “Kane here! Trophy gone!” after German champions Bayern Munich were thrashed 3-0 in their own Allianz Arena by German Cup holders Leipzig to lift the DFL Super Cup.
The England captain had finally completed his £100m move from Tottenham at around 10 o’clock in the morning saying he was joining a club who have proven they can win things. But after his ineffectual 26-minute cameo, Munich fans were left worried if instead the famous club had hamstrung itself by signing a striker who simply cannot.
Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel chose to keep him on the bench until Dani Olmo had put the visitors 2-0 up on his way to what would become a hat-trick soon after Kane came on. In the end he admitted he felt sympathy for the England captain.
“We don’t expect him to be the superhero,” he said. “We just expect him to be who he is. A top guy, a top goalscorer and a top personality. I feel sorry for him. We did not create. We did not keep the momentum going. We did not create enough for him.
“He will help us a lot. We need exactly his attitude. To help us step out of the circle of repetitive performances like this.”
The fairytale for Kane had been winning his first ever trophy just hours after leaving Tottenham to do precisely that.
However, he was restricted to just a couple of touches and Tuchel admitted the pressure was on the rest of his new team-mates to get him involved more when the serious business of the Bundesliga starts at Werder Bremen on Friday.

It was certainly something of a reality check for a man who had already lost a League Cup final and a Champions League final with Tottenham.
“Harry went to bed at three or four o’clock, after his medical,” Tuchel said. “We need to learn from him. He does not need to learn from us. He will help us a lot to escape the cycle or poor performances we have been having.”
