Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has reportedly set his sights on snapping up Stuttgart ace Borna Sosa in a bid to solve the Blues’ left wing-back problem this month.

Tuchel has seen Chelsea’s title challenge capitulate over the past few weeks following a string of disappointing results over the festive period.

The loss of some key personnel, namely Ben Chilwell and Reece James, has seriously hamstrung the Blues’ ability to keep up with Manchester City and Liverpool and, ultimately, curtailed their hopes of wrestling the Premier League crown away from Pep Guardiola’s side.

After Chilwell was ruled out for the rest of the season, Chelsea have been making tentative enquiries to try and find cover for the £50million England man.

But after resisting the urge to make a move for ex-Everton ace Lucas Digne, the Blues could be forced into the transfer market after all following their failed bid to recall Emerson Palmieri back from his season-long loan spell at Lyon.

According to a new report from Sky Germany, Tuchel has identified Sosa as a potential target if Chelsea do decide to sign a replacement for Chilwell.

Given that the Blues passed on a move for Digne, it seems that the Stamford Bridge hierarchy may be reluctant to splash out on a permanent deal for another left-back given Chilwell’s impressive form since his switch from Leicester City.

But their hand could be forced if their dismal run of results continues.

Sosa has established himself as a key player at Stuttgart since he arrived at the club from Dinamo Zagreb in 2018 and has racked up over 70 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit.

The 24-year-old, who is reportedly also being tracked by Italian giants Inter Milan, has a contract tying him to Stuttgart until the summer of 2025.

The report outlines that Chelsea or any interested suitor would have to meet Stuttgart’s £25m valuation of the full-back if they are to prise Sosa away from Germany.

Despite Chelsea’s injury woes, Tuchel refuted claims that the Londoners were in need of new recruits just last week.

“Of course we will try to improve, but if you mean do we need other players, I think we just need our whole squad,” Tuchel said after last weekend’s 1-0 defeat against Manchester City.

“Were Liverpool able to compete last year for the title? No. The only real difference was that they were lacking Virgil van Dijk.

“I said it many times, key players are key players because they are key in everything they do and every way in which they behave.

“To compete and do what we need to do for 90 minutes, we need everyone and we’ve struggled because of long-term injuries and Covid.

“Still we are reliable and still we want to push ourselves, and still we will not make excuses. It’s just to explain the situation.”
