Thibaut Courtois ‘doesn’t understand’ how he missed out on Ballon d’Or podium
Real Madrid shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois struggled to hide his disappointment after he missed out on a spot on the 2022 Ballon d'Or podium.
The big Belgian was hoping to become the first goalkeeper since the legendary Lev Yashin in 1963. Bu the shot-stopper failed to even claim a spot on the podium, and Courtois struggled to hide his emotions when speaking to the Spanish media.
The Belgian said: I'm very happy for Karim Benzema. I'm not saying I would have won it, but I'm not even on the podium being the goalkeeper who won La Liga and the Champions League.

"It seems that scoring a goal is better than stopping it. It is a battle that remains to be won. Seeing the logic and knowing how they vote, I knew I would have no chance of winning it.
"A future-winning goalkeeper? I see that as impossible for a goalkeeper." The Belgian added: "It's impossible to win this award. I don't know if as a goalkeeper you can do more than what I did last year."
Courtois was awarded with the Yashin award – the trophy handed to the best goalkeeper of the year.

Despite winning La Liga and the Champions League last season, Courtois only ranked seventh in the rankings.
Benzema won his first Ballon d'Or on Monday evening with Sadio Mane and Kevin De Bruyne rounding out the podium.
