Three points for the Blues would see them move into fourth place, while the Toon meanwhile sit just one spot off the bottom three, albeit seven points clear.

Chelsea’s first ever black player Paul Canoville is ‘making some progress’ in intensive care after complications from surgery last month… with new banner paying tribute to him to make its debut at Stamford Bridge tonight

Former Chelsea star Paul Canoville is ‘making some progress’ after going into intensive care.

It emerged at the beginning of February that the 58-year-old, the Blues’ first ever black player, was in a critical condition following complications of emergency surgery.

But his foundation have since issued a positive update on Canoville – as Chelsea get ready to display a new banner for the first time paying tribute to him during tonight’s match against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge – writing on Twitter: ‘Paul remains in intensive care but is making some progress.

Kepa Arrizabalaga makes just his fourth Premier League start of the season as Chelsea host Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.

The under-fire Spain goalkeeper has played second-fiddle to summer signing Edouard Mendy in west London this term.

But Thomas Tuchel promised the £72million signing from 2018 a ‘new start’, and the Blues’ new boss has delivered on that pledge.

Kepa kept a clean sheet in Thursday’s 1-0 FA Cup win at Barnsley, and has earned himself a first league start since October.

Tammy Abraham starts up front alongside Timo Werner, having notched the winner at Barnsley.

Dwight Gayle started up front for a Newcastle side looking to build on their 3-2 league win over Southampton last weekend.

Say what you want about the brutal sacking of Frank Lampard but Thomas Tuchel has got Chelsea firing again hasn’t he?

Five games played, unbeaten, won the last four and dare I say the Blues are showing a bit of swagger too. Can Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United really stop them?

Stranger things have happened as I welcome you to our live coverage of all the action.
