Borussia Dortmund have become a formidable force in the transfer market in recent years but they could be set for a turbulent summer.

Failure to qualify for the Champions League may see a number of star players leave the club with Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho two of the most likely to try and force through a move.

Dortmund are currently fifth in the Bundesliga with 10 defeats while every club above them has lost no more than four games. They are seven points off the Champions League places, 14 points behind second placed RB Leipzig and 19 short of leaders Bayern Munich.

It won’t just be Haaland and Sancho that will attract interest in the summer should Dortmund fail to qualify. With that in mind, Sportsmail takes a look at the players that could be heading for the exit.

Borussia Dortmund’s big players could push to leave if there’s no Champions League football

Arguably Dortmund’s biggest asset, the Norwegian has attracted interest from multiple clubs in Europe including Real Madrid, both Manchester teams and Chelsea.

The striker has 33 goals in 34 games across all competitions at club level this season after his tally of 44 in 40 last term.

Haaland deserves to be playing in the Champions League and is starting to look frustrated with the fortunes of his club. The Norwegian stormed off following Dortmund’s 2-2 draw with Cologne as they lost more ground in the race for the top four.

The forward’s £66m released clause becomes active in 2022 but he may not want to wait until then if it means a season without Europe’s elite club competition.

Dortmund may also see the value of selling for a bigger fee this summer rather than losing their star man for significantly less a year on.

Jadon Sancho

The German club looked destined to lose the England international to Manchester United last summer but held firm to their valuation of £108m, which the Red Devils were not prepared to meet.

After a bit of a slow start, Sancho has racked up 12 goals and 16 assists in all competitions following his total of 20 of each last season.

Like Haaland, the forward will be keen to avoid a campaign without Champions League football. Sancho would still command a big fee but Dortmund are unlikely to get what they were holding out for last summer.

They could be tempted by a lower bid with the pandemic continuing to cause financial problems and CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke admitted the situation had changed.

‘In the midst of a pandemic, I no longer rule anything out,’ he told Handelsblatt in February.

‘Asking banks for credit lines at the drop of a hat just to avoid selling a player will not be our way.’

Gio Reyna

The United States international became the latest Dortmund youngster to light up the Bundesliga last year as he scored nine goals and made 10 assists in his first season.

The 18-year-old has continued his impressive form with four goals and seven assists in all competitions this term.

Reyna signed a new long-term deal until 2025 in November which means Dortmund are in a strong position. He may also be keen to continue his development with the German club having made significant progress so far.

However, Manchester City and Real Madrid have both been credited with interest in the attacking midfielder.

Joining City would see Reyna follow in the footsteps of his father, Claudio, who played for the Premier League side between 2003 and 2007.

Mahmoud Dahoud

After initially struggling for game time this season, Dahoud has become a regular starter and his impressive performances have caught the eye of a number of clubs.

As Sportsmail reported last month, Chelsea and Manchester City are among a group of Premier League clubs keeping tabs on the midfielder.

He is well known to current Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel having joined from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2017 in a deal agreed while Tuchel was still in charge – although he had left by the time of his arrival.

The Syria-born player will have just one year left to run on his contract from this summer, increasing his appeal to admirers.

Raphael Guerreiro

The left back has been one of Dortmund’s most consistent players this season with nine assists – four more than he managed for the entire 2019-20 campaign.

The 27-year-old, who is contracted until 2023, can play further forward as well as in defence.

Real Madrid are said to have their eye on the Portugal international but Manchester City could also be tempted with the club thought to be on the lookout for a left back in the next transfer window.

Guerreiro was one of the players singled out by Pep Guardiola when talking about Dortmund’s quality ahead of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

Julian Brandt

The German international could be on his way out of the the club with BILD reporting he will be available for as little as £21m this summer.

Brandt is versatile and can play in a number of positions across the midfield but has been in and out of the starting XI this season.

Arsenal are one of the clubs to have been credited with an interest in Brandt and were heavily linked with the German in January before acquiring Martin Odegaard on loan.

The Dortmund man could be an alternative option if Mikel Arteta fails to land Odegaard on a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Julian Brandt has previously attracted interest from Arsenal and could be available for £21m
