THE NOTEBOOK:Hodgson takes leaf out of Bielsa's book

THE NOTEBOOK: Roy Hodgson takes a leaf out of Marcelo Bielsa’s book, Weston McKennie reveals his go-to for pre-match music… and Leeds directors have a trip to forget

  • Crystal Palace defeated Leeds United 5-1 at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon
  • Roy Hodgson was apparently wandering the streets of Leeds before the game
  • Meanwhile Leeds directors have a trip to forget after their five-goal drubbing

Crystal Palace came back in remarkable fashion on Sunday afternoon to hit five past Leeds United to give Roy Hodgson a massive 5-1 win in his second game back in charge.

The Whites took the lead through Patrick Bamford who netted his 50th goal for the club after 21 minutes, and at that moment it looked like a 5-1 win was not going to happen for the visiting side.

Yet, Hodgson’s team bounced back, with Marc Guehi getting an equaliser just before half-time, before Jordan Ayew could double their lead after the break.

He’d be back to net another soon after, but not before Eberechi Eze and Odsonne Edouard both got in on the action with a string of quick-fire goals that left Javi Gracia’s side stunned.

Sportsmail‘s Jack Gaughan was at Elland Road and has all the things you might have missed from the Eagles’ epic win.

Roy Hodgson reportedly took a leaf out of Marcelo Bielsa’s book wandering around the city

Hodgson takes a leaf out of Bielsa’s book

Roy Hodgson was channelling his inner Marcelo Bielsa a few hours ahead of the game, happily wandering the streets of Leeds down by the Marriott hotel in the city centre.

The Crystal Palace boss, 75 years young, is reinvigorated for being back in football.

‘I don’t bother about my age because I don’t feel my age,’ he said.

‘The one thing I am definitely not going to say is that after, when the summer comes, I am retiring. I’m not actively seeking to keep going, but who knows what the future brings?’

McKennie reveals his pre-match music

Weston McKennie’s interview in the Leeds programme was something of a contradiction.

McKennie is known for his positivity — with no fewer than eight exclamation marks in his programme comments.

But his go-to for pre-match music is the folky Angela by The Lumineers.

‘Mellow country vibes,’ he said. Probably with a chuckle.

And the Eagles celebrate their joint-biggest away win in the Premier League after five-goal win

Palace go big

This was Palace’s joint-biggest away win in the Premier League, after a 5-1 win at West Brom in 2020 — with both coming under Roy Hodgson.

It is also the first time in 32 years that Leeds have let in five goals in a top-flight home game, since a 5-4 defeat by Liverpool in April 1991.

Directors have a trip to forget

Leeds director Peter Lowy, a key player in the 49ers Enterprises investment group, chose a bad game to come over from Los Angeles to watch.

He sat with Massimo Marinelli — a key adviser to Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani — but the trip was one to forget.
