Terry reacts after Rooney reveals he wore longer studs to injure Chelsea player
John Terry says he wasn’t bothered by Wayne Rooney’s recent comments about wanting to deliberately injure a Chelsea player when Manchester United travelled to Stamford Bridge back in 2006.
In Amazon Prime’s ‘Rooney’ documentary, the iconic ex-United and England striker admitted he switched out his regular studs for longer ones as he was so infuriated by the prospect of Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea winning the Premier League.
The Football Association launched an investigation into Rooney’s revelation and the 36-year-old, now manager of Championship outfit Derby County, has since received a verbal warning from the governing body.
Terry was on the end of a horror challenge from Rooney in Chelsea’s 3-0 win and left the stadium with the aid of crutches after lifting the Premier League trophy that day, despite staying on the field for the entire 90 minutes.
However, during a Q&A session with his Instagram followers on Sunday, Terry brushed off Rooney’s behaviour, saying the clash with his former England team-mate was just one of several ‘battles’ they had down the years.
Asked whether he cared about Rooney’s comments, Terry replied: ‘Of course not.
‘We know each other well enough and had many battles over the years.
‘Two stitches at half-time, there was no way I wasn’t coming out for the second half to win the league beating Manchester United 3-0.’
Addressing the media earlier this month, Rooney – United and England’s all-time top goalscorer – said he was ‘pleased’ the matter had been ‘put to bed’ after his warning from the FA.
‘I gave my response to the FA, they’ve given me a warning and that’s it,’ he told reporters.
‘The matter has been put to bed so we can move on from that.
‘It is what it is. The FA, it was obviously reported, and they’ve had to look into it.
‘I got a warning. That’s it, it’s done, we move on.
‘The matter’s closed and I’m pleased with that.’
