Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has confirmed he talked with ‘a lot of players’ who were intrigued by a move to Old Trafford back in the summer. The Red Devils are no longer the biggest force in the city ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. However, their manager feels they’re capable of attracting big players still – as well as having some in their squad already.

Manchester United have regressed in the years since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, with the Scot stepping down back in 2013.

Manchester City have become the biggest club in the country in the time since, with the Red Devils’ fierce rivals winning four of the last five Premier League titles.

United are a shadow of the club they used to be ahead of Sunday’s crunch fixture but Ten Hag, speaking ahead of that showdown, has insisted they remain attractive in the transfer market.

Asked how they can attract top talent, he said: “We have them already in.

“Let’s say some have the potential to become (the best in the world) and some are already are there.

“We have world champion players in our squad – so they are the best in the world. You can say that.

“We have a lot of players who have already won the biggest titles in the world.

“I’m sure also when I look back at the transfer window that I was in contact with a lot of players who feel Man United is a really attractive club for them.

“So I’m not concerned about that point.”

On Sunday, United will go up against a City side fully firing with Erling Haaland their talisman.

The Norway international has scored 14 goals already this term, with 11 of those coming in the Premier League.

And Ten Hag has admitted he’s a huge fan of the 22-year-old, but insisted Guardiola’s side are more than just one player.

He said: “I like Haaland’s attitude and how he is on the pitch.

“He is direct. His life is about goals – and he goes directly toward the opponent.

“He can also create – but once again I respect him.

“But we are not playing against Haaland. We are playing against Man City – and it is not about Man City.

“For us, I respect the opponent – but it is about Man Utd.

“We want to play our game, with our principles and our rules.”

And Ten Hag has also confirmed he’ll ask Jadon Sancho, who played alongside Haaland at Borussia Dortmund, for advice over how to stop the City star.

“Of course you talk with your players,” he stated.

“Of course I also know Pep – but we know everything about each other.

“Is he best manager (in the world)? He’s definitely one of them – and for me he is, yes.

“But there are many more really good world-class managers in football.”
