Ten Hag ‘has Kudus on Man Utd transfer shortlist’ but may lose out to Brighton

Man Utd name price for Sancho and 12 others ahead of summer clearout

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been handed another blow this summer, with Brighton reportedly leading the race to sign Ajax star Mohammed Kudus. The Red Devils have been handed several setbacks already this summer, and the higher powers at the club will be hoping for more positive advances over the coming weeks.

Ten Hag’s first season in the Premier League was a significant success in the eyes of many, finishing third in the table and also guiding the club to success in the Carabao Cup. United also reached the final of the FA Cup but suffered disappointment in the Europa League.

Thus, Ten Hag is keen to splash the cash to improve his squad further so that his side can compete in all competitions and also mounting a title charge. The ex-Ajax boss acquired Lisandro Martinez and Antony from his former side last summer, and he is hoping to return to the Eredivisie with further spending power once again.

Versatile playmaker Kudus has reportedly been identified as a target at Old Trafford, though they may need to act quickly if they are to secure his signature. According to De Telegraaf reporter Mike Verweij, Brighton are currently in pole position to sign the midfielder and have held concrete talks with Ajax about a potential move.

He explained: “Brighton are the most serious. But if Manchester United becomes serious for Kudus, then Erik ten Hag can do great things for his former club again just like when he bought Antony for £80m (€100m). Kudus won’t go for the same price but his price would surely go up.”

Kudus is keen to leave Ajax this summer after rejecting a contract extension at the Johan Cruyff Arena earlier this season, with his agent speaking publicly about how she believes it is the right time for her client to move on – with a Premier League destination preferred.

United are currently locked in talks with Chelsea about Mason Mount, and if negotiations with their rivals fizzle out – which is likely if their £55m bid is rejected – then it would be no surprise if Kudus is pursued more vigorously – if he is still available at that time.

The Ghana international can play in midfield as well as across the frontline, with Roberto De Zerbi perhaps considering how he will need versatility next season now that Brighton have Europa League fixtures to contend with in their already busy schedule.
