Joel Glazer may not have fulfilled his promise of providing financial backing to Manchester United whilst his family are in control of the club, with their departure reportedly on the horizon. It has now emerged that an ownership takeover at Old Trafford may now be imminent, which could be music to the ears of Erik ten Hag ahead of the summer.

According to the Daily Mail, there is ‘word’ that the Glazers are prepared to relinquish themselves of control of United if an appropriate bid arrives. There has been serious doubt over whether the Americans were seriously entertaining full takeover offers over the past few months, with reports speculating on divided opinions within the family.

Though an end date now appears within reach, with talks ongoing with interested bidders, such as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim. Both have arrived with offers for the Glazers, as well as providing United fans with the hope of a return to the glory days – with the owners largely blamed for their disappointments since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

The news could be promising for Ten Hag too, who has never shied away from speaking about his desire to bring in reinforcements. The ex-Ajax was forced to go without in January though, with his side only dipping into the loan market rather than splashing any serious cash.

Jack Butland, Marcel Sabitzer and Wout Weghorst were all acquired on short-term deals, and the trio appear unlikely to stay beyond this season as it stands. A mere hat-trick of loans to plug holes in the squad was far from what Joel Glazer previously promised when he spoke last year.

Speaking at a United fans’ forum, he said: “We’re very happy with the summer. We can always improve. There’s always more work to be done.” But rather than improve in January, United were reluctant to truly make their mark in the window and instead relied on Ten Hag to make use of his depth to ensure that the club continued to progress – as he has.

The departure of Cristiano Ronaldo was, in the eyes of the Glazers, dealt with by acquiring Weghorst, with Sabitzer also ensuring that Christian Eriksen’s injury was not detrimental. It is unclear as to how Ten Hag felt about the window overall, though he did hint in the latter stages of the window that he would like the club to bring in further signings, saying: “In the coming days, should we have an opportunity, I would go for it but it’s not only up to me.

“I think that always has to be the approach at this club. Every day you have to get better so if there are opportunities to get better then you have to strike, that’s my approach. I’m looking, doing research, I have an idea and have profiles to strengthen the squad.”
