Erik ten Hag blasts Man United stars for an ‘unforgiveable’ capitulation and not following rules in defeat to Borussia Dortmund

  • Man United suffered three defeats in the four matches during their US tour

Erik ten Hag has slammed Manchester United’s players for an ‘unforgivable’ capitulation during their 3-2 friendly defeat against Borussia Dortmund in the United States.

The Red Devils ended their US tour with a third consecutive defeat, following a 2-0 loss to Real Madrid and their Under-21 side being beaten 3-1 by Wrexham.

Having taken the lead through Diogo Dalot at the at the Allegiant Stadium, United conceded twice to Donyell Malen in a matter of seconds just before half-time as Dortmund turned the game around.

For Dortmund’s second, Tom Heaton, was culpable for a risky pass to Victor Lindelof, who tried to find Donny van de Beek on the edge of his box, only for ex-United loanee Marcel Sabitzer to cut it out and tee up Malen to score.

Brandon Williams was playing Malen onside when he received the ball from Sabitzer and slotted past Heaton. Heaton blamed Williams who responded furiously, shouting: ‘My fault? It was your f***-up!’.

Youssoufa Moukoko scored the winner to consign Man United to a third defeat of the US tour

After Antony levelled at 2-2, Aaron Wan-Bissaka surrendered possession in the build-up to Youssoufa Moukoko’s winning goal for the Bundesliga side.

Andre Onana, who replaced Heaton at half-time, also berated Harry Maguire during the second half after a mix up between the defender and Scott McTominay.

Ten Hag, who sent on a number of first-choice players after an hour, described the capitulation as ‘unforgiveable’.

He kept the squad behind longer than expected afterwards before the team flew back to Manchester from Las Vegas after losing three of their four games on tour.

‘There are no excuses,’ Ten Hag said. ‘We have to perform no matter what and then you have to be ruthless and win games because we are Man United and the fans are expecting from us wins.

‘I said to the team, I think it was a good tour but you want to finish with a good performance and you see only 60 minutes where I was pleased with but not with the goals we conceded because they were really poor.

‘The first goal was really poor defending and the second one really poor in building up, and that is not us. We have to keep the control and you have to keep the responsibility on the ball and it was the same on the 3-2 for Dortmund, so it can’t happen and it’s unforgivable even if it’s a friendly.

‘We were performing well, playing as a team, a lot of dynamic good pressing, so it was really enjoyable to see. That is what I wanted to say to the team at half-time and then all of a sudden they gave two goals away and they really were giveaways.

‘So that was already annoying but the last half an hour was bad, a poor performance. We didn’t follow the rules at all, not in pressing, not in building up and not in attacking, so there were 11 individuals finally on the pitch and that wasn’t good at all.’

Ten Hag separately warned teenage winger Omari Forson that he would have been sent off in Las Vegas had there been VAR at the game.

Ten Hag insisted there were ‘no excuses’ for the performance and criticised poor defending

The Man United boss warned youngster Omari Forson he risked being sent off in a competitive match with VAR after he kicked out at Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Ryerson

Forson was substituted 38 minutes into the match after he kicked out angrily at Julian Ryerson and was then booked for squaring up to Karim Adeyemi who stepped in to defend his teammate.

Man United will conclude their pre-season preparations with a double-header this coming weekend.

They host Lens at Old Trafford on Saturday before facing Athletic Bilbao in Dublin on Sunday.

Ten Hag’s side will open their Premier League campaign with a home match against Wolves on August 14.
