Liverpool and Manchester United will be the only two English clubs not to win their European groups this season, according to a supercomputer. Liverpool are currently second in their Champions League group, while United occupy the same position in their Europa League group.
Jurgen Klopp’s Reds came close to lifting the Champions League trophy last season after reaching the final of the competition, where they were ultimately beaten by Real Madrid. But they have endured a difficult start to the current campaign and were thrashed 4-1 by Napoli in their opening European match last month.
The Merseyside giants have won their other two matches in the competition after seeing off Ajax and Rangers. But they trail Napoli by three points and the OLBG supercomputer has predicted they will finish runners-up before facing a group winner in the last 16.
United, meanwhile, also came unstuck in their first Europa League encounter of the season as they were beaten 1-0 by Real Sociedad at Old Trafford. Erik ten Hag subsequently led his side to victories over FC Sheriff and Omonia Nikosia – but the supercomputer thinks the team have left themselves too much to do to win the group and has tipped them to qualify in second.
Manchester City have been in imperious form once again this season and have won all three of their Champions League matches to storm to the top of their group. And the supercomputer thinks they’ll have no issues securing top spot. Chelsea and Tottenham, meanwhile, are both second in their Champions League groups. But after taking into account their recent form and upcoming fixtures, the supercomputer has also predicted them to qualify for the knockout stages in pole position.
And Arsenal should have no problems taking top spot in their Europa League group. The Gunners are currently two points clear at the top of the table, despite playing a game fewer than two of the other teams.

Chelsea were the last English club to win the Champions League after getting the better of Pep Guardiola’s City side in the 2021 final. And Liverpool, who were crowned champions in 2019, have demonstrated their prowess in the competition after reaching three of the last five finals. But the Citizens are favourites to win the Champions League this season after signing prolific goalscorer Erling Haaland in the summer.
Chelsea were also the last English club to win the Europa League after defeating Arsenal in the 2019 final. The Red Devils were defeated in the Europa League showpiece event in 2021, while Scottish giants Rangers lost last season’s final against Eintracht Frankfurt.
